As summer winds down, children will begin returning back to school throughout this month. The start of a new school year is the perfect time to reiterate proper safety practices to your children and yourself.
General:
- Every child needs to memorize their address, phone number and emergency contact information
- Plan out a walking route to school or the bus stop that you show your children before the first day of school
- Teach your kids — whether walking, biking, or riding the bus to school — to obey all traffic signals, signs and traffic officers.
School zone driving safety tips:
- ALWAYS obey the speed limit
- Be aware of and watch out for children at all times
- Always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children
- Obey school crossing guards and their signals
- Avoid using a cell phone in order to be most alert
School bus safety:
- Arrive at least five minutes before the scheduled stop time
- Never walk in the driver’s blind spot – the area from the front of the bus to about 10 feet in front of the bus
- Hold the handrails getting on and off the bus
- Never cross the street in front of the bus before the driver motions to do so
- Stay seated on the bus at all times
Riding a bicycle to school:
- Always wear a helmet. Fitting should be snug – only two fingers should be able to fit between it and the forehead
- Ride on the right side of the road and always follow the rules of traffic
- Utilize the buddy system for the ride to and from school
Walking to School
- Always walk with a group
- Always walk on designated walkways and sidewalks
- Only cross the street at designated crosswalks
- Look both ways before crossing the street
