Warm weather, longer days, vacations, a trip to the beach, and holiday cookouts are just what makes summer, well, summer. Vitamin D is important, of course, but enjoying all of those outdoor activities means you need to take a few extra precautions to protect your skin from overexposure. Follow these easy tips to keep you and your loved ones safer in the summer sun!
Top Tips For Summer Sun Protection
- Sunscreen – top of the list, as expected. Everyone knows about sunscreen in general, but did you know you should actually put it on 30 minutes before you venture outside? Also, make sure you use a broad spectrum sunscreen – that means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays – with an SPF of at least 30. Reapply right after swimming or sweating (because water resistant doesn’t mean waterproof), or every two hours.
- Hats – hey, it’s portable shade! Seriously, though, a wide brimmed hat is great for keeping you cooler and keeping the sun off your head, face, and neck. Ball caps are ok, but just remember to keep reapplying a high SPF sunblock to your ears and neck since they’ll still be exposed to the sun.
- Sunglasses – not the cheap ones, either. Though they don’t need to be top-of-the-line, since you’re mostly concerned about lenses designed to block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Sunglasses (particularly the wrap-around style) also help protect the skin around your eyes from sun damage and can reduce your risk of cataracts.
- Clothing – a simple, long-sleeved shirt is an easy solution, here. Something light and loose fitting won’t make you too hot, and many brands now offer apparel made with SPF materials, usually called sun protective clothing.
- Shade –the sun’s rays are most intense between 10 am and 4 pm, so any time you can manage to locate some shade during those hours are helpful. An umbrella, shade tent, or even a tree is the best SPF you can get, and can provide some much-needed relief from the sun at its peak hours.
Being sun smart goes a long way towards preventing both short-term and long-term sun damage to your skin. And you wouldn’t want a painful sunburn keeping you from enjoying your days off, now would you? Of course not!
